mix_012.jpg (132434 Byte) Bad bad commander... :-) He caught me while talking to the passengers and explaining them what to see beneath us (no, not the bread pieces that fell down taking the picture above, but the Pyreneen mountains). (18.02.2005, STR-AGA)

mix_001.jpg (78153 Byte) On 15.03.2005, we met our fellow B737-800 over KORNO (west of the Strait of Gibraltar). We were cruising at FL350, coming from behind, they were up at FL370. This constellation usually motivates us to start the rather unfair game "Zwillenfressen" (Boeing-eating), as we call it humourously. It starts with us behind the B737, lower or higher, and as the A310 cruises a little bit faster than the Boeing in ECON mode, we progressively come closer. They can't see us but on the TCAS, but usually have no idea who we are. As soon as we are in a position below the 737, we go in to Heading Select mode...
mix_002.jpg (109882 Byte) ...and turn by two or three degrees. This swings us to the side of the 737, and their crew suddenly gets aware of us. Then we advance the throttles, and overtake the 737 with our unfair capability of featuring a max Mach of 0.84 compared to the max Mach 0.82 the 737 can do.

Note the nice "sundogs" (an optical phenomenom) around the 737's starbord winglet!

mix_002b.jpg (66979 Byte) Bye bye! Unfair, as I said, but very fun to do. May the 737 crews forgive me... :-) (15.03.2005, STR-TFS)
mix_018.jpg (78162 Byte) Same game, different place. We were cruisin' from Agadir towards the Strait of Gibraltar, when we caught this 737-800 from Travelservis (Czech charter operator) from behind. Slowly, slowly... (18.02.2005, AGA-STR)
mix_019.jpg (84339 Byte) ...swing to the "shocker position"... (18.02.2005, AGA-STR)
mix_020.jpg (86381 Byte) ...and busted! Bye bye :-) (18.02.2005, AGA-STR)
